Exploring VR Gaming

An experience like no other! Virtual Reality (VR) immerses you into a world of gaming that’s so real, you may have a hard time coming back to reality.

VR Background & History

The best way to understand VR is to break it down into two parts. The definition of virtual is slightly ambiguous: think about it as something that doesn’t physically exist yet appears to. Reality, of course, is what actually exists. Combining the two basically means “seeming-reality.” VR gives us the ability to explore worlds that we might never get a chance to see in real life.

The idea of VR dates back to the 1800s, when artists began creating panoramic paintings to make the observer feel like they were completely immersed in the art. The goal was to fill the observer’s entire field of vision with the painting. Around 1930, the first flight simulator was created to allow pilots to practice their skills in an environment that felt similar to flying a real plane. In 1935, Stanley G. Weinbaum’s science fiction short story “Pygmalion’s Spectacles” effectively predicted modern-day VR technology. He wrote about a pair of goggles that allow the wearer to experience an entirely different world—including not only holographics, but different tastes and smells. Since then, small but critical advances in technology have allowed us to build on Weinbaum’s idea.

Fast forward to the 1980s, when NASA began working on VR concepts. The industry took a giant leap forward in 2007 when Google got involved. In 2014, Facebook bought VR headset manufacturer Oculus and Sony announced their idea for a virtual reality project. Enter VR gaming...

First Person VR Gaming

Picture
VR gaming offers the user a fully immersive, first-person perspective of game action. Think about playing your favorite video game, but then literally being dropped into that world as your own character. It’s that other-worldly sensation that sets VR apart from any other form of gaming.

At Nomads, you can escape into a number of worlds—from the soccer pitch and being a chef at a 5-star restaurant to deep space and more.

We’ll use the “Creed Boxing” world to offer a sample of what it’s like. For anyone who loves the “Rocky” and “Creed” spinoffs, you’ll get to test your pugilist skills as Adonis Creed, going up against storied characters in the “Rocky” realm, including Clubber Lang, Viktor Drago, Danny Wheeler, and more.

Once you slip the VR headset on, you’re Adonis Creed—in the ring, under the lights, surrounded by crowd noise. You face off against your opponent throwing every punch you’ve ever seen in a real fight. Uppercuts, hooks, haymakers, and blocks are all part of your repertoire. You’ll also get tagged (VR bonus: you won’t get hurt, but you will lose points). What makes it so real is that the game is designed to track and respond to your movements. If you throw too many punches and tire yourself out, the virtual ref will force you to take a time-out. Once you’re in Adonis’s world, you’re completely immersed. You experience a whole new world, one punch at a time.

Arcade Game Hacks

We all love to play arcade games—and we really love the tickets. Check out the tips below to help you win big next time you are at the arcade!

So Many Games, So Little Time

Nothing has the same allure as an arcade game. Whether it’s an old school pinball machine, a drop game, or interactive digital, it’s a blast to test your skills with and against your friends. The music and the lights just add to the fun.

A big part of the arcade experience is being rewarded when we win those games of skill. Having rolls of tickets hanging off your shoulder is like a badge that says, “I’m the king of the concourse.” Getting prizes is great, but just the act of watching those tickets pop out can be addictive.

The question is, can you find hacks to win more tickets? Yes, you can. It’s nothing sneaky or illegal—it’s more about your technique. Nomads Adventure Quest has over 110 games, so we can’t show you how to take control of the whole place, but we can offer some insights on winning tickets at a couple of the most popular games.

Scoring More at Skee-Ball

Skee-Ball just might be the best test of skill, agility, and touch on the concourse. It can also offer a ton of tickets if your technique is up to scratch. Here are a few tips to help raise your Skee-Ball game and make the ticket counter sing.
  • It’s all about positioning. Your stance and balance can help dictate your accuracy. Stand with the foot that corresponds with your throwing hand braced against the alley, with your other foot behind you to maintain balance. Think of this as the foundation of your shot. If you maintain the same position for every throw, it creates more consistency for your follow-through.
  • Get low. When you crouch or bend a bit when rolling your ball, you get a better view of the lane. It might seem a little counter-intuitive, so it takes practice. Be patient.
  • Aim for the 40-point ring. Sure, it would be great to hit the 50-point ring every try, but the 40-point ring is easier to hit. And if you do it consistently, you can maximize your point total. If, for example, you’re throwing 9 balls, you end up with 360 points—an excellent score worth a lot of tickets.
Practice, practice, practice. The more you play, the better your skills and technique and the more you win. It’s all about the tickets, baby!

Taming the Tower of Tickets

Tower of Tickets is one of the most popular arcade games. Why? Because it gives out a ton of tickets. In this case, winning definitely takes skill. Here are a few tips that can help you tame the Tower:
  • Timing. The skill lies in timing your sweep to push the Tower of Tickets bundles off the platform onto the rotating playing field.
  • Work the delay. After you win any amount of tickets, there will be a delay when the arm comes down on the next play, so take that into account when considering your timing.
  • Use the “Win” sign to your advantage. Hit the button just as the highest-ticket value puck reaches the middle of the word “Win” printed above the button to your right.
  • Go big. Go for the 1,000-ticket puck every time you get the chance.
  • Be quick. It is extremely hard to win back-to-back, 1,000-ticket pucks, but it can be done. You need to press the button quickly and work with the timing of the delay of the arm.
  • Practice, practice, practice (again). As with any great game, it requires practice to perfect your timing. But, once you get it down, you can expect to sweep your way into a bunch of tickets.
